Apparently, I have a disease.

This from Kate Beckinsdale, the star of the new movie Nothing But The Truth: “And I was so shocked to see people admitting to being Republican on their front lawn!”*

Normally, I don’t comment on what celebrities about politics, mainly because they don’t have a clue of whence they speak.  I think celebrities should stick to what they’re good at: being celebrities, i.e. making movies, making music, (in the case of Paris Hilton) making a spectacle of themselves.

Now, maybe this is her way of commenting on the fact that Americans declare their political allegiances loud and proud, unlike their European brethren.  If this were the case, however, I don’t know why she’d single out Republicans in particular.

Sadly, however, Ms. Beckinsdale is providing valuable insight into how the elites in this country (who are almost uniformly liberal and self-declared) view Republicans: a disease (or at the very least, a social disorder).  You can almost hear the conversation that must be going on amongst liberals.

“Did you hear about so and so?”

“No, what happened?”

“He’s a Republican.”

“Oh . . . his poor wife!  What is she going to do?!”

“She’s a Republican, too.”

“Oh . . . Dear God!  You mean . . . it’s contagious!  The government should take their kids before they catch it, too!”

We conservatives are no more Satan than you liberals are angels!  We’re all human beings and we all have a right to our beliefs and opinions without having them denigrated by the Hollywood zeitgeist.  So, please, Ms. Beckinsdale, next time you meet a conservative, try engaging them in conversation.  Don’t worry, we don’t bite and you certainly won’t catch anything from us!  Well . . . nothing that you couldn’t get from a liberal as well.

As for conservatives, we must engage our political opponents on equal terms.  We cannot and must not stoop to their level.  After all, liberalism isn’t a disease . . . just a state of mind.  Have you hugged your liberal today!
